1. First and foremost get an architect who understands what growing green means, they are the ones who will make the design and can advise you the best
2. Use of solar energy wherever required
3. Water harvesting should be done. Both ground water recharge and storage tanks should be created. Storgae tanks would help in with your garden and with your flushing system
4. Try and incorporate illumination by as much natural lighting as possible, I dont think pune has many hot hot summer months so this will be possible by using lots of glass
5. Study the wind pattern in your region and try to have as much cross ventilation as possible in the rooms, can save heavily on electricity bills
6. Investing in good quality electrical wires and sensible uncluttered wiring can save lots of electricity, do not go for extra plug points if not required.
7. For avoiding point no 6, it is prudent that you also decide your interiors when the internal wiring is being done, so you exactly know that in a room where the bed will be so accordingly you will know where the tv point should be or the AC point should be and so on.
When wires are cut and rejoined there is some loss of currnet.
7a. Similarly decide about plumbing in advance also, decide what faucets, the make and the deisgn. Decide what wc or what sink would you be using. This will help the plumber and save you money in later stages.
8. Termite treatment is a must if the area is termite infested. Please get it done thoroughly by a reputed vendor. They usually give a 5 yrs guarantee (ofcourse with lots of underlines). If I was you I would definitely get treatment done but apart from that I would avoid using wood for window frames and door frames on the ground level. Stone ones look pretty, are termite proof and definitely much cheaper than wood
9. For home flooring I think tiles would be the best, or you could go in for marble
Also going green reminds me that the ITC Green centre building in Gurgaon has been winning lots of awards national and international for its contribution towards the environment.
There are lots of articles on the net telling what all does the building has. I know some of the points may not be usable at home but you could get lots of ideas from there

1. Double wall construction with an air gap in-between for outer walls of the house. This reduces the overall heat transfer coefficient and the house remains cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
2. On the floor of the first floor, we used semi-opaque toughened glass (~20 mm thick). It can easily take up human or furniture load. It effectively illuminates the ground floor and we don't have to use tube-light/bulb during daytime. The semi-opaqueness also ensures privacy for first floor occupants
Do not go for CFL's. Go for LED lights instead. There are many vendors supplying them, May be expensive now but you have a 10 year odd life time and lower consumption of electricity which will help you.
Try to make your rooms very spacious and roomy, Huge windows in the kitchen is very important.
Keep big ventilators around your house. This gets both light and wind.
Install a solar water heater and rain water harvesting now itself.
Make a kitchen garden with the water used in your kitchen going directly to a tank in your garden. This water will be good and will not be wasted.
Check wooden flooring. This will be easier to maintain too.

Try to use recycled waste water to be used for flushing , this step is much easier and cost effective to implement when initial plumbing is done. This will definitely save lot of potable water going down the drain via flush.
Some ideas about going green apart from LED lighting, water reuse etc.
1. Used/antique furniture - All furniture is mostly made of wood or wood products so re using them would be ECO friendly
2. Reclaimed wood flooring - This is not as inexpensive as you would want it to be but is made from timber obtained from demolished buildings
3. Re use doors and windows from old buildings - this is self explanatory.
4. Atthangudi tiles - These are hand made in the Chettinad region of Tamilnadu apart from providing employment to rural artisans they also are very low in energy consumption and also keep the home cooler in summers.

First of all, unless the builder is able to understand your ideas, you may not really be able to do all the eco friendly solutions. So, try to find a good architect as several have suggested.
Some technologies:
1. Using hollow clay blocks. Weinerberger is a german company, but frankly, locally made Indian blocks are also pretty good if you are fine to go with a rustic look.
Why is this eco friendly: Cement industry is pretty heavy on energy usage, and so, you save all this.
Painting cost is far less.
2. Use of stone to enhance the look as well as make it eco friendly.
Again painting cost is less, which means you are making it more eco friendly.
3. Use of tall windows, which reach all the way up to the ceiling and which have a small ventilator on the top. This allows hot air which moves up in the room to escape via the ventilators. Cooler air will come through the windows.

4. Any good architect should plan for cross ventilation for good air flow. Good airflow means, no need to use AC. Well, personally i feel buildings can be designed to never need AC - after all most of us grew up in non- ac envirnoments and it was pretty comfortable then due to our building designs.
5. Use of hollow clay blocks in the south west portions specially to reduce heat gain.
6. Painting the roof white to reflect heat.
7. Having a layer of hollow clay blocks under the top most roof, which again creates a layer of air, and this reduces heat propogation from the roof.

The design if wrongly done cannot be redone (without major costs). For me the design is a non negotiable, every thing else can be worked around it.
Discuss these issues with your architects. From the model, it seems that your house will be like any other "contemporary" design. The ancient practise of having courtyards was also to enable low pressure areas inside the house so that air from outside could be brought in.

The three most important criteria for a TRUE green building are:
1) Least adverse impact on the environment while building the house. This will mean, use of material which is locally manufactured AND most suited to the local micro-climate, as far as possible. Transportation alone, can hugely add to the structure's ecological footprint. Material commonly used in traditional homes in any region, is always friendlier to the climate of that region. Your architect can help you with specifics, as this is a general guideline.
2) Least adverse impact on the environment while planning the house. The right kind of plan / layout will go a long way in ensuring that your house stays green through its lifespan. Windows located in the east / north help, while those in the south / west should be avoided. A courtyard will definitely help in naturally taking hot air out of the house, as will tall windows with ventilators and cross-ventilation. Thicker / insulated walls in the south and west will help. Besided these basics, there are many criteria with regard to planning / locations of rooms, which can be discussed in detail.
3) Least adverse impact on the environment while using the house. This is where active technologies come into play. Before you get into gadgets like solar panels, windmills, et al, do consider the following: Simple ways to harvest rainwater, will keep your groundwater levels "charged". Recycle your kitchen drain water for toilet flushing, gardening, and such tasks. Incorporate a compost-pit to create garden fertilisers from your wet waste. Remember, the fundamental thought for green living is "Take the least, waste the least". When you learn to recycle your resources, you will automatically "take the least" from outside - get it ??
If you follow these basic guidelines, and incorporate what you can right at planning stage, you won't have as much need for fancy and expensive gadgets. Many so-called eco-friendly gadgets claim to be cheap to run, but go deeper and understand the REAL cost-benefit ratio. Most gadgets in their manufacturing stage itself, leave such a HUGE negative environmental impact, that they negate their very existence. Check whether you really need these.
